2016 New Hampshire Turkey Virus Monitoring Update

December 21, 2016

This was the fifth year biologists were recording evidence of avian pox virus and Lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) in turkeys.  While turkeys are still being affected throughout the state, numbers with the debilitating clinical lesions in the head/eye area appear minimal.  Relatively few reports of the diseases were made by the public via the online reporting surveys conducted during the summer and winter, or on spring and fall hunting season registration forms.  In all, turkey biologist Ted Walski recorded 15 cases in 15 towns this year, representing 8 of the 10 counties in the state.  The summer brood survey recorded cases in six other towns.  In total, there were 21 New Hampshire towns with reported cases of the turkey viruses in Grafton, Sullivan, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Belknap and Coos counties.
