September 2, 2015

Ruffed grouseThe small game hunting season will be here before you know it.  Ruffed grouse, woodcock, snowshoe hare and squirrel are exciting to hunt and make excellent table fare.  Small game hunters have two N.H. Fish and Game Department surveys to participate in and possibly win a gun.

The first is the annual Small Game Survey, where hunters can help Fish and Game by providing data on their hunts.  The Small Game Survey provides Fish and Game with distribution, abundance and trend data on the state’s small game populations. Those who participate are entered into a raffle for a rifle donated by Sturm, Ruger and Co. Inc. Request a paper survey by calling 603-271-2461 or emailing wildlife@wildlife.nh.gov.

The second survey is the annual Ruffed Grouse Wing and Tail Survey.  Grouse hunters can participate by picking up grouse sample packets, which include envelopes and survey cards for two grouse samples, from any of the participating locations listed below.  Completed packets must be returned to one of these locations.  Packets will be available as of September 14, 2015.

All those who turn in completed and useable grouse survey packets will be entered into a drawing for a quality shotgun donated by the Ruffed Grouse Society.

Please let other ruffed grouse hunters know about this survey and help Fish and Game increase participation this year, and say thanks to these business owners for their support.  For more information on the grouse survey, call Karen Bordeau, N.H. Fish and Game Small Game Project Leader, at Fish and Game’s Region 2 Office in New Hampton, N.H., at 603-744-5470.
