Wildlife Control Operator Class Offered
December 26, 2013 – The New Hampshire Wildlife Control Operators (WCO) training class, offered once a year, will take place on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Fish and Game headquarters in Concord.

New Rules for 2014: Hunter and Bowhunter Education to Be Combined
December 21, 2013 – New for 2014, Fish and Game will combine the basic hunter education program and the bowhunter education program into one course. Separate bowhunter education courses will continue to be offered only for the 2014 calendar year.

December 12, 2013 – A lost Massachusetts hiker spent a bitterly cold night in the White Mountains before being airlifted to safety today.

Moratorium Established for 2014 Northern Shrimp Fishing Season
December 4, 2013 – The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section has approved a moratorium for the 2014 northern shrimp fishing season.

Public Hearing December 19 on Shellfish Aquaculture Proposal
December 4, 2013 -- N.H. Fish and Game will hold a public hearing on a proposed marine aquaculture application for license on December 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the Fish and Game Region 3 Office in Durham. 

Wildlife Action Grants Available
December 3, 2013 -- Teachers and community members interested in involving youth to make a difference for wildlife through habitat projects on schoolyards, public areas or community lands can apply to the Homes for Wildlife Action Grant Program for start-up funds. Applications due by February 1, 2014.

N.H. Fish and Game Biennial Public Hearings Set
December 3, 2013 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will hold two biennial hearings in December, giving the general public an opportunity to offer input on any aspect of Department operations.  The two sessions will be held on December 10 in Lancaster; and on December 11 in Concord.

November 20, 2013 – A 21-year-old Bedford man faces multiple charges related to possession of stolen lobster gear, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials reported today.

Deer Harvest Up; Bear Season Average
November 19, 2013 – New Hampshire’s regular firearms deer hunting is going well; through November 17, hunters had taken an estimated 9,122 deer in New Hampshire, a 10% increase over last year at this point in the season.

Apprentice Hunting License:  "Take a friend – Make a hunter"
November 5, 2013 – New Hampshire is once again offering the Apprentice Hunting License, which allows people to hunt, under the guidance of an experienced hunter age 18 or older, without first taking a Hunter Education course.

2013 Youth Deer Hunt Weekend Results for New Hampshire
November 4, 2013 -- Preliminary reports show that young hunters succeeded in harvesting 411 deer during the 2013 Youth Deer Hunt Weekend in New Hampshire, which took place on October 26-27.

-- N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers successfully located a hunter from Laconia who had been reported overdue from his hunt in Pittsburg on Saturday evening (November 2).

October 28, 2013 – Opening day for New Hampshire’s regular firearms deer season is November 13, 2013, a date anticipated with great enthusiasm by the state’s 60,000 deer hunters. Muzzleloader season starts November 2.

64% of Hunters Successful in 2013 N.H. Moose Hunt
October 28, 2013 -- New Hampshire’s 2013 moose season wrapped up on Sunday, October 27. Preliminary figures show that 179 hunters succeeded in taking their moose during the 9-day season, a statewide success rate of 64%.

More Bobcat Counters Needed for Trail-Camera Study
October 22, 2013 – N.H. Fish and Game and UNH are looking for a few more volunteers to participate in a trail-camera count of bobcats in three specific study areas in southern New Hampshire. Training starts this week.

NH Moose Hunt Opening Weekend Results
October 21, 2013 -- Of the 281 permits issued to hunters participating in the 2013 New Hampshire moose hunt, 18% were successful upon completion of the opening weekend of the hunt.

October 13, 2013 -- A hiker from Kennebunkport, ME,collapsed and died while descending the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail in Crawford’s Purchase Saturday night around 9:30 p.m.

Hiker Dies in Hart’s Location
October 12, 2013 -- A Massachusetts man died while hiking in Hart’s Location on October 12.  Rescuers responded to a call of an unresponsive hiker, age 60, approximately one-half mile up the Ripley Falls Trail. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.

Hunting Related Shooting Incident Occurs in Dummer, NH
October 12, 2103 -- 55-year-old David Osgood of Berlin, NH, was struck by bird shot on his right side when his son, 24-year-old Cory Osgood of Nottingham, discharged his shotgun at a woodcock.

ATV Crash in Jericho Sends Massachusetts Woman to Hospital
October 12, 2013 -- A Massachusetts woman is lucky to be alive after crashing her rental ATV over a steep embankment in Jericho State Park Saturday in northern New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

October 11, 2013– Commercial fishermen will be prohibited from landing Atlantic herring taken from Management Area 1A effective 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

Last Chance for Fall Brood Stock Atlantic Salmon Anglers
October 4, 2013 – Fall brood stock salmon fishing is underway. About 1,500 Atlantic salmon, ranging from two to five pounds, have been released at the usual fall stocking sites in Franklin and Bristol. The recent closure of the Merrimack River salmon restoration program means this will be the last chance for fall brood stock salmon fishing in New Hampshire.

Shooting Incident Occurs in Pittsburg, NH
October 3, 2013 -- On October 2, 34-year-old Patrick Sullivan of Goffstown, N.H., was struck by bird shot on his lower extremities when his friend, 36-year-old Adam Gilman of Hopkinton, discharged his firearm at a grouse in Pittsburg.

Atlantic Herring Days Announced
September 27, 2013 –Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commissioners from the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts held a conference call with industry representatives present and set the allowable landing days for Trimester III (October 1-December 31, 2013) for Management Area 1A of the Atlantic herring fishery.

Fisherman Dies in Connecticut River, Colebrook, NH
September 25, 2013 - On September 25, 2013 at around 10:00 AM, John Cornish, age 71, of Salem, Massachusetts, was involved in a tragic accident while launching his boat on the Connecticut River in Colebrook.

N.H. Pheasant Season Opens October 1
September 24, 2013 – New Hampshire's hunting season for pheasant gets underway on October 1 and continues through December 31. There will be 73 stocking sites in 49 towns.

Atlantic Herring Days Out Meeting September 27, 2013
September 24, 2013 -- The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Atlantic Herring Section will hold a conference call on Friday, September 27, at 9:00 a.m., to discuss the allowable ‘days out’ measures for Area 1A for the October 1 through December 31 period.

September 23, 2013 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department will hold a public hearing on a proposed marine aquaculture license amendment on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. at the Fish and Game Region 3 Office, 225 Main Street, Durham, N.H. 03824.

Two Men Killed in Separate ATV Accidents in the North Country
September 21, 2013 -- On September 21, at 2:30 PM, Clifton Scott, age 79, of Stewartstown, N.H., was killed in an off highway recreational vehicle (OHRV) crash on the Dixville Peaks Trail in Dixville. In a separate incident that afternoon, 40-year-old David Howe of Colebrook died in Colebrook after rolling his ATV.

Wakefield, MA, Teen Injured in Brentwood (NH) Dirt Bike Crash
September 21, 2013 – A Wakefield, Massachusetts, teen was transported to Beth Israel Hospital in Massachusetts after sustaining serious injury from hitting a tree with his dirt bike and being thrown from it.  The accident occurred on a private course in the woods off Route 125 in Brentwood, NH.

N.H. High School Bass Fishing Tournament Set for Sept. 26, Oct. 5
September 20, 2013 -- Student bass fishing tournaments are a popular new high school sports competition in New Hampshire. A qualifying tournament with 42 registered teams will take place on September 26 out of Lee’s Mills on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Hiker Dies after Fall at Tuckerman Ravine
September 20, 2013 -- A 25 year old man died after falling while descending the Tuckerman Ravine trail yesterday afternoon. The victim was Luc Paquette, age 25, of Boisbriand, Quebec, Canada.

National Hunting & Fishing Day NH Expo: September 21, 2013, in Concord
September 16, 2013 – In observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will host a Sporting Expo at Fish and Game headquarters, 11 Hazen Drive, in Concord from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on September 21, 2013. Free admission!

Thornton, N.H., Man Goes Missing from the Banks of the Baker River
September 16, 2013 – The search continues today for Michael Gatto, age 51, primarily of Thornton, NH, who went missing from the banks of the Baker River on Saturday evening (September 14, 2013). Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Plymouth Police.

Merrimack River Atlantic Salmon Restoration Winds Down; Focus Shifts to Shad, other Fish
September 13, 2013 – A hopeful era drew to a close on September 5, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that, facing federal budget cuts and stubbornly low annual returns of sea-run Atlantic salmon, it will end its investment in the more than 30-year-long Atlantic salmon restoration in the Merrimack River watershed.

Public Hearing on 2014 Marine Rules – October 1, Portsmouth
September 13, 2013 – A public hearing on proposed amendments to N.H. Fish and Game marine fisheries rules, as well as proposed rule changes for Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission-managed species, is set for October 1, at 7 p.m. at the Urban Forestry Center, 45 Elwyn Road in Portsmouth, N.H.

Missing Girl Found Safe after Search in Gilmanton
September 9, 2013 – On September 8, a five year-old girl from Brookline, N.H., was found safe after disappearing in woods near a relative’s home on Rollins Pond Road in Gilmanton. The girl was discovered after a more than six-hour search.

Atlantic Herring Closure Effective September 9
September 6, 2013 – Commercial fishermen will be prohibited from landing Atlantic herring taken from Management Area 1A effective 12:01 a.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013 through midnight September 30, 2013, because herring harvesters are projected to reach the allowable harvest quota for the June 1 to September 30 period.

Early Migratory Game Bird Seasons Set
August 6, 2013 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department has finalized the 2013 hunting season dates and bag limits for early season migratory game birds, with no changes from last year, except that possession limits rise to three times the daily bag limit, rather than two times the daily bag limit.

New Minimim Sizes for Commercial Groundfish and Flounders, Recreational Haddock
June 27, 2013 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department will be implementing interim rules on July 1 to change the minimum size limits of some groundfish species and implement a minimum size limit for witch flounder for commercial harvesters. Changes are also in the works for recreational harvest of haddock.

Body of Missing Kayaker Recovered
June 25, 2013 – Divers today recovered the body of a missing kayaker in the Squamscott River near the Newfields/Stratham town line.  The victim has been identified as Ann Colcord of North Hampton, N.H., age 59.

Search for Missing Kayaker in Great Bay Area Underway; Kayak Found
June 25, 2013 -- On June 24 at 9:00 p.m. North Hampton Police were notified of a missing kayaker. Her vehicle was located at Chapman's Landing in Stratham. The kayak was later found, however, the search continues for the missing woman, whose name is being held pending family notification.

Missing Girl Located on Green Mountain
June 12, 2013 –At approximately 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Fish and Game personnel received a call advising that Joelle was located by a local hiker on the peak of Green Mountain. Conservation Officers and Effingham Fire fighters hiked to her location where she was treated for mild hypothermia placed in a litter and carried off the Mountain by rescuers.

Injured Hiker Carried Off Boulder Loop Trail (Albany, NH)
June 3, 2013 – A team of rescuers carried an injured hiker to safety in Albany, N.H., Saturday evening (June 1). Dr. William Segel of Berlin, Vermont, age 70, was climbing with some friends on the Boulder Loop Trail, when he slipped and fell about twenty feet, sustaining leg injuries.

ASMFC Northern Shrimp Section Modifies Landing Days
March 8, 2013 –The Commission’s Northern Shrimp Section has extended the number of allowed landing days for the 2013 northern shrimp trawl fishery. Effective March 13, the trap and trawl fisheries will be able to land shrimp seven days a week. Additionally, the trap and trawl fisheries will close at midnight on April 12.

Injured Hiker Carried Off Mt. Major
January 7, 2012 -- On Sunday, January 6, 2013, 21-year-old Shannon Koechel of Bedford, NH, slipped and fell while hiking with a friend on the Boulder Loop Trail on Mt. Major in Alton, injuring her leg. She was rescued by Fish and Game and Alton Fire Department personnel.

No Victim Found in Rindge Submerged Snowmobile Incident; Ice Safety Warning
January 4, 2013 -- Searchers did not locate a victim today at the scene of a partially submerged snowmobile in Emerson Pond in Rindge, N.H. Officials cautioned that despite recent frigid temperatures, ice conditions across the state are marginal and thin ice and open water are present on many waterbodies.
