Spawning Closure for Atlantic Herring September 16 - October 13, 2011
DURHAM, N.H. -- Atlantic herring (sea herring) harvesters and dealers should be aware that herring spawning areas within the jurisdiction of New Hampshire will be closed from 12:01 a.m. on September 16, 2011, through midnight on October 13, 2011 (pursuant to Fis 603.07). It is unlawful to fish for, take, or possess unprocessed herring during this closure.
The closure was originally scheduled to begin on September 21, 2011, but the start has been moved up because recent sampling of Atlantic herring landings indicates herring are ready to spawn.
An exception to the rule is that any vessel may land herring taken as an incidental catch in the Massachusetts/New Hampshire Spawning Area, up to a maximum of 2,000 pounds.
This spawning closure may be extended by the Executive Director if results of the herring samples collected at the end of the closure indicate spawning is ongoing.
For more information about the closure or the boundaries of the spawning area, call the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s Marine Fisheries Division in Durham, N.H., at (603) 868-1095.
