Vermont Man Dies while Hiking on Willey Mountain Trail in N.H.
CONCORD, N.H. – A 69-year-old man, Phillip G. Phillips of Thetford, Vermont, died yesterday (November 30, 2010) while hiking in the Crawford Notch area of New Hampshire's White Mountains. Phillips and a companion had taken the Ethan Pond Trail to the Willey Mountain Trail to the summit of Mt. Willey. On the return trip down, he collapsed on the Willey Mountain Trail at about 2:30 p.m. His female companion dialed 911 for help, then applied cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for an extended period of time, but was unable to revive him.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers responded to the scene, arriving about 6:00 p.m. Rescuers carried Phillips out to the parking lot, arriving at the trailhead in Hart's Location, N.H., just before 8:00 p.m. He was very well prepared with hiking gear, but appears to have succumbed to a medical emergency.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers were assisted by personnel from the Appalachian Mountain Club and Twin Mountain Fire and Rescue.
