Free Talk Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at 7 p.m.: Upland Bird Hunting Primer

CONCORD, N.H. -- Set your sights on successful grouse hunting this year!  Come to a free talk called "Upland Bird Hunting Primer" on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H.  The talk is part of Fish and Game's fall series of Tuesday evening hunting talks that continue through September.  No pre-registration is required.  Seating is first-come, first-served. Admission is free.

The outlook for hunting New Hampshire’s premiere game bird, the ruffed grouse, is excellent this year. Experts and locals agree -- there's lots of grouse (partridge) out there. That said, this clever bird can be a bit of a mystery.  Join noted dog trainer and fanatical grouse hunter Garrett Booth of Grey’s Outfitting for an inside look into grouse hunting. At the talk, Garrett will explain how to find covers that hold birds; he will provide dog training and handling tips, offer guidance on shooting and shot size selection, plus get into gear, trip planning, hunting dog care and field care of these wonderful game birds.

More information on grouse hunting in New Hampshire, including Fish and Game Small Game Biologist Julie Robinson's favorable outlook for the season, is available on the Small Game Hunting page of the Fish and Game website at www.huntnh.com/Hunting/Hunt_species/hunt_small_game.htm.  If you do hunt grouse this year, be sure to participate in both Fish and Game's Small Game Survey and the Ruffed Grouse Wing and Tail Survey, which is statewide this year.  Participation in either or both of these surveys gives small game hunters a chance at winning a quality firearm. Learn more and pick up a survey packet at the talk.

"Upland Bird Hunting Primer" and other evening hunting talks at Fish and Game are intended to help hunters prepare for a great fall season in the field. Future topics in the series include fall turkey hunting tactics on September 21, 2010; and scouting and hunting strategies for whitetail deer on September 28, 2010. The talks are free and will be held on Tuesday nights at N.H. Fish and Game headquarters, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H. at 7:00 p.m.  Visit www.huntnh.com.
