Injured Cross-Country Skier Carried out of Zealand Trail
Bethlehem, N.H. -- A cross-country skier injured her leg while descending on the Zealand Trail late Saturday morning (March 6, 2010) in the town of Bethlehem, N.H. Officials say 54-year-old Jeanne Cleary of Watertown, MA, was skiing down the Zealand hiking trail after spending the night at the Zealand Hut, when she suffered a leg injury approximately one mile from the trailhead.
Rescue personnel from Twin Mountain and Bethlehem Fire/Rescue and volunteers from Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue responded to the call and assisted in the carryout.
This rescue was helped considerably by the fact that it was more accessible to emergency personnel because of an active logging operation that has kept the Zealand Road plowed this winter. The road is normally closed to vehicular traffic during the winter months.
Cleary was transported to Littleton Regional Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
