Marine Updates: Change in Federal Recreational Cod Fishing Season; New Winter Flounder Closure for N.H. Recreational Anglers
DURHAM, N.H. – New Hampshire saltwater recreational anglers should take note of two changes affecting fishing seasons this spring:
Atlantic Cod Season Change: Federal rule changes have changed the opening date for the recreational take of Atlantic cod in federal waters to April 16; no Atlantic cod can be possessed in federal waters before April 16, 2010. The Atlantic cod fishing season in New Hampshire waters (within 3 miles from shore, including the New Hampshire shoreline of the Isles of Shoals) has not changed for 2010, recreational cod fishing opens April 1 as usual. Anglers intending to stay solely in New Hampshire state waters during a saltwater fishing trip may start keeping these fish on April 1. If they intend to fish federal waters, they will have to wait until April 16, 2010.
Closed Season for Winter Flounder: The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has put in place a brief closed season for the taking of winter flounder by recreational anglers this spring. The taking of winter flounder will be prohibited in New Hampshire state waters from May 15 through May 24, 2010. Fish and Game has implemented this closure in response to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s passage of Addendum 1 to the Winter Flounder Fisheries Management Plan, which requires the state to reduce recreational harvest of winter flounder by 11%. There are no other changes to the rules for winter flounder season besides the closure; the minimum size limit of 12 inches and the daily bag limit of 8 fish per day remain in effect.
For any questions regarding these or other marine related fishing laws, please contact the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Marine Division at 603-868-1095. Find out more about N.H. Marine fisheries management at www.fishnh.com/marine.
