Injured Hiker Assisted to Safety in Sharon, N.H.
CONCORD, N.H. -- An injured hiker, 55-year-old Charles Tobin Vaughan, a resident of Sharon, N.H., was helped to safety by rescuers after falling while hiking the Wapack Trail in Sharon this morning (July 7, 2009). Vaughan was hiking a section of the trail he typically walks on a daily basis. Nearing the end of his two-mile trek, he slipped on wet rocks roughly a half-mile in from Temple Road, seriously injuring his leg. He called his sister for help about 8:30 a.m., using his cell phone. She hiked in to assist him, then realized the seriousness of the injury and called 911 for help.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officer David Walsh responded, along with Fire Department personnel from Temple and Peterborough. Vaughan was carried to the trailhead and transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Vaughan was well prepared with good hiking boots and proper clothing, according to Walsh.
