Introduction to Turkey Hunting -- Free talk April 22 in Concord, N.H.

CONCORD, N.H. -- If you're new to turkey hunting or have been thinking about giving it a try, come to a free seminar called "Introduction to Turkey Hunting" on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 7 p.m. at N.H. Fish and Game headquarters in Concord, N.H. This session is for beginners, and features New Hampshire (and Maine) Hunting Guide Dave Smith and Bill Devon, N.H. State Chapter President of the National Wild Turkey Federation and a Pro Staff member of Quaker Boy Game Calls.  There is no charge for the session, however pre-registration is required; call 603-271-6355 to reserve a space.
The seminar goes over basic turkey hunting tactics -- what you need to know to succeed at turkey hunting. "Our goal is to educate and to create a knowledgeable, safe, ethical and successful turkey hunter," said David Smith.  "I place a heavy emphasis on pre-season scouting, explaining when, where and why to scout."

The session also explains the equipment and preparation needed for turkey hunting, including types of gear, sighting in shotguns, camouflage and more:

  • Game identification -- learn how to identify toms, jakes and hens;
  • Types of turkey calls -- friction and mouth calls, as well as how to use these calls to call a turkey;
  • The pros and cons of using decoys for turkey hunting;
  • Your set-up: concealment and site selection for higher success;
  • Key safety guidelines all turkey hunters must know.
