Public Informational Meeting on Winnicut River Dam Removal Project
DURHAM, N.H. -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Marine Fisheries Division has scheduled a public informational meeting on Monday, November 10, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Greenland Town Hall, 575 Portsmouth Avenue, Greenland, N.H., to provide an update on the progress of the Winnicut Dam removal project and address questions pertaining to the submitted Wetlands Dredge and Fill Permit. This meeting will also serve as an opportunity to further identify consulting parties in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and to provide an update on the historical surveys and Memorandum of Agreement.
All project partners involved -- the N.H. Fish and Game Department, N.H. Department of Environmental Services (DES), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service - are committed to keeping the public informed during the design, permitting, and construction phases of the project.
A Feasibility Study was completed in 2005 to help N.H. Fish and Game and other state and federal project partners determine the best alternative to dam safety and fish passage concerns. Fish and Game is pursuing the dam removal option, with assistance from project partners. The removal is progressing with design of a run-of-river fish passage system under Route 33, dam and fish ladder removal, and habitat restoration from 2008 through 2010.
Hard copies of the completed Feasibility Study are available for public review at the following locations: Greenland Town Hall, Weeks Public Library, DES (Concord or Portsmouth office) and NHF&G Region 3 office (Durham, N.H.).
A copy of the complete Feasibility Study is also available for download from the N.H. Department of Environmental Services (DES) website at: http://www.nh.gov/des/organization/divisions/water/wmb/coastal/restoration/projects/winnicut.htm.
