Double Snowmobile Fatality in Ossipee
CONCORD, N.H. -- A snowmobile accident claimed the lives of two young Ossipee residents Tuesday evening, April 1, 2008. The victims were Raymond Eldridge, age 18, and his 8-year-old cousin, whose name is being withheld in consideration of his age. Family members have been notified.
At approximately 8 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers and local police and fire personnel were called to the scene of the fatal crash, which occurred on Corridor 19 in Ossipee, an old railroad bed trail. Both riders were severely injured when found, and they were transported to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, where they were pronounced dead.
The two cousins had been riding on one snowmachine, the third in a group of three snowmobiles traveling together. They were not wearing helmets when the accident occurred.
The incident remains under investigation by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, however it appears that speed and icy trail conditions were likely factors.
Tuesday's accident was the fourth snow-machine-related fatality in New Hampshire this year. Fish and Game Major Tim Acerno cautions snow machine operators to be aware that changing trail conditions during the spring season create many potential hazards.
No further information is available at this time.
