Snowmobile Accident at Nash Stream; ATV-related Arrest in Berlin
CONCORD, N.H. -- A Lancaster man was involved in a snowmobile accident on Little Bog Pond in the township of Odell in the Nash Stream State Forest late Saturday night (January 26, 2008). Brett Savage, age 37, was riding across Little Bog Pond at approximately 10:30 p.m. when he crashed into a rock formation that creates a dam at the southwestern end of the pond.
Emergency crews from Groveton Ambulance responded, using snowmobiles and rescue sleds to travel the nearly 9 miles to the scene of the accident. Savage was transported to Weeks Hospital in Lancaster, where he was treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation by New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law enforcement officers is still ongoing, but speed does appear to be a factor, according to Conservation Officer Mark Ober.
In a separate incident, a Berlin man was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) on an off-highway recreational vehicle (OHRV). N.H. Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers arrested Allen Sanschagrin, age 35, for operating an OHRV with a suspended/revoked driving license and DWI at approximately 11:00 p.m. Saturday night in the section of trail known as Lessard's Field in Berlin. This stretch of trail is off limits to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), but is open to snow machines.
Sanschagrin was operating a 3-wheeled ATV and was accompanied by two minor children. N.H. Fish and Game was assisted by the Berlin Police Department. Sanschagrin was transported to the Berlin Police Department, where he was processed and released on $1,000 Personal Recognizance bail, with a court appearance scheduled in the Berlin District Court in March.
