Salem, N.H., Man Injured in Snowmobile Accident

CONCORD, N.H. - Ronald Allen, age 43, of Salem, N.H., was injured in a snowmobile accident at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2008, while riding on the Corridor 104 snowmobile trail in Bethlehem.  Allen missed a turn in the trail and struck a tree; the crash ejected him from the snow machine.  Bethlehem Fire and Rescue personnel transported Allen, who appeared to have suffered severe trauma, by ambulance to the Littleton Regional Hospital.

The incident is being investigated by New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement.  No further information is available at this time.

Major Tim Acerno, coordinator of Fish and Game's Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle (OHRV) Program, reminds snowmobile operators to "know your abilities and understand the capabilities of your snowmobile.  Every operator and every machine is different.  Identify these levels and stay below them, and you can count on a safe and enjoyable ride."

Acerno strongly recommends checking trail conditions before you head out to snowmobile, especially if you're planning to ride in an unfamiliar area.  "Trail conditions are forever changing, so make sure that you operate your snowmobile at a speed that is reasonable for the existing conditions," Acerno says.  The N.H. Bureau of Trails website at lists trail conditions.  You can also call the N.H. Snowmobile Association hotline for a trail report -- updated twice a week -- at (603) 740-5050.
