CONCORD, N.H. – After three days of intensive search efforts, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department has made the difficult decision to suspend search efforts for Kevin Race, the 46-year-old man from Woolwich, Maine, who has been the focus of an extensive search on Mount Washington since he was reported missing Monday evening.

Race was last seen hiking Mt. Washington on Sunday, September 9, in the base of Tuckerman’s Ravine. New Hampshire Fish and Game investigators believe Race may have gone to Mt. Washington to end his life.

“We have done everything within reason to find Kevin,” said Lt. Douglas Gralenski of Fish and Game Law Enforcement.  “The problem we’re facing is that we really don’t know where Kevin went after he left Tuckerman’s Ravine.  If Kevin wished to be found, I feel confident we would have found him.  Unfortunately, if Kevin doesn’t want to be found, our job is next to impossible.”
The N.H. Fish and Game Department has heavily relied upon its field force of Conservation Officers, the Army National Guard Helicopter and crew, as well as members of Appalachian Mountain Club, the Mountain Rescue Service, New England K-9 Search and Rescue, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team and the U.S. Forest Service.

“As always, the volunteer search and rescue community has given all that we’ve asked of them,” said Lt. Gralenski.  “I know that if we had any creditable information as to where Kevin might be located, they would continue to provide any assistance we asked.  Unfortunately, the hard truth of the matter is that we have done everything within reason, without any new clues being developed.”

Although air and ground search efforts have been suspended, the case will remain open.  “We are looking for any information anyone may have regarding Kevin’s whereabouts,” said Lt. Gralenski.  “If anyone may have been hiking the Mt. Washington area and seen Kevin since 2:30 pm on Sunday, September 9, we definitely want to know about it.”

Kevin is described as being 5 foot, 11 inches tall and about 195 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes.  He has a mustache with corners extending down the sides of his chin.  Kevin was last seen wearing a rust-colored shirt, dark down jacket, Asolo boots with a dark ski hat.  He was also wearing a medium-sized backpack, blue and black in color, with a 75-foot rope strapped on top of the pack.  Anyone who may have information is asked to contact the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department at (603) 271-3361.
