Moose Hunt Opening Weekend Brings 25% Success
CONCORD, N.H. -- Rainy, windy weather made for a slow opening weekend for the 18th annual New Hampshire moose hunt. So far, a little more than a fourth of the state's moose hunters have hit their mark. On Saturday and Sunday, a total of 133 moose were taken by moose hunters statewide -- 101 bulls and 32 cows (female moose). In contrast, by this same point in the season last year, a total of 212 moose had been taken.
Numbers were down at check stations around the state with the exception of Hillsboro, which was the only station registering in more deer this season than last, checking in 23 moose over the opening weekend compared to 18 last year.
New Hampshire's nine-day moose hunt continues through Sunday, October 23. More than 15,800 people entered the 2005 lottery for a chance to be offered one of the 525 permits issued to hunt moose this year in the Granite State.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is the guardian
of the state's fish, wildlife and marine resources and their habitats.
