Public Information Meeting on Gonic and Gonic Sawmill Dams
DURHAM, N.H. -- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
and the N.H. Department of Environmental Services will hold a public meeting
on October 13, 2005, at 7:00 pm, in the Gonic Mill Building at 10 Main
Street, Gonic, N.H., to discuss the options considered in restoring
the Cocheco River with a focus on the Gonic and Gonic Sawmill Dams. A
draft feasibility study looking at various options to restore river functionality,
ecology, and eliminate public hazards to this area of the Cocheco River
was recently completed, along with a historical/archeological evaluation
of the mill complexes and surrounding community.
The public meeting will review the options considered during the study to achieve a healthier river environment and reduce public hazards (such as nonfunctioning dams in disrepair), as well as consider historic resources. This meeting will also serve as an opportunity to identify consulting parties and provide public information on the historic evaluation conducted in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. A paper copy of the feasibility study and historic evaluation are available at the Rochester Town Library. All reports can also be downloaded from the following web link: http://des.nh.gov/Dam/DamRemoval.
Comments on the draft feasibility study are due no later than November 11, 2005. Written or electronic comments should be sent to Mark Wamser, Gomez and Sullivan Engineers, 55 North Stark Highway, Weare, NH 03281, mwamser@gomezandsullivan.com. Questions about the meeting should be directed to Mark Wamser at 603-529-4400.
