Atlantic Herring Harvesters Notified of Spawning Closure
CONCORD, N.H. -- Herring fishermen and dealers should be aware that herring spawning areas within the jurisdiction of New Hampshire will be closed from 1:00 a.m. on September 21, 2005, through 1:00 a.m. on October 20, 2005 (pursuant to closure regulations Fis 603.07), according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
During this spawning closure, all vessels fishing for species other than sea herring will be limited to an incidental catch of 2,000 pounds of herring per calendar day, caught in or from the management area subject to a spawning closure.
Any vessel fishing for sea herring may fish for, take, land or possess spawn sea herring (technically referred to as in ICNAF gonadal stages V or VI) caught in the spawning area, as long as those stages comprise less than 20% of the amount of sea herring in possession.
Any person, firm or organization properly permitted, may land sea herring from areas not under spawning closures, provided they are equipped with a functional vessel monitoring system.
If you have any questions, please contact the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Marine Division at (603) 868-1095.
