North Conway Man Injured in Snowmobile Accident

CONCORD, N.H. - A North Conway man was injured in a snowmobile accident in Freedom, N.H., on Wednesday, February 2. Allen E. Rowe, age 53, of North Conway, was found lying unconscious next to his snowmobile about 8:30 p.m. on a snowmobile trail near Ossipee Lake Road in Freedom. He was found by Freedom Police Chief Charles Pearson. Rowe was transported to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, then airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for treatment of life-threatening head injuries, and remains in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Rowe was alone at the time of the accident and lost control of the snowmobile, causing it to roll over. Rowe was not wearing a helmet, and it appears that alcohol played a role in the accident.

The incident remains under investigation by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the Freedom Police Department.

No further details are available at this time.

Fish and Game officials urge snowmobile operators to use caution and common sense when riding the trails, including driving at safe speeds, anticipating unexpected trail hazards and wearing protective gear.
