Unit M Antlerless Deer Permits Available July 1
Lottery Discontinued

CONCORD, N.H. -- Starting July 1, hunters who want to try for a second deer during this fall's hunting season can apply for a permit from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department to take one additional antlerless deer in Wildlife Management Unit M (located in the southeastern part of the state). Unit M antlerless deer permits cost $13; applicants may be residents or nonresidents, but must hold a valid 2004 New Hampshire hunting or archery license. Only one permit is allowed per person.

Permit sales begin July 1. The permits will be issued from Fish and Game Headquarters in Concord ONLY. Permit application forms can be picked up at Fish and Game headquarters, at license agents in the seacoast area; or printed from the Fish and Game website. Applicants may either send completed application and payment by mail or come in person.

This year, Unit M permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of completed application, rather than by lottery, as was the case in the past. There will also be fewer Unit M permits issued this year -- 3,250 in all -- because the number of deer in southeastern New Hampshire has stabilized.

"We've stopped deer population growth on the seacoast, so we're issuing just the number of permits to keep it at its current level," said Fish and Game Deer Project Leader Kent Gustafson.

The permits allow hunters to take one antlerless deer (in addition to deer that may be taken with a firearms or archery license) in Wildlife Management Unit M on any day during the archery, muzzleloader and regular firearms season. See the N.H. Fish and Game website or the New Hampshire Hunting Digest for a description of Unit M boundaries and additional season information.
