West Henniker Dam Breaching Ceremony:
15 Miles of River to Be Re-connected
Members of the media are invited to witness the initial breaching of the West Henniker Dam in Henniker, NH on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. The removal of this 10-foot high, 130-foot long concrete dam will restore the Contoocook River and eliminate a public safety hazard. Fifteen miles of river will be re-connected through the project, enhancing paddling opportunities and restoring riverine habitat to benefit sportfish and other species. There will be representatives from New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Town of Henniker, the Henniker Historical Society, and other involved parties speaking at the ceremony.

Directions to event site: From I-89: Take Exit 5 onto Route 202/9. Continue west for 7.5 miles. Exit onto Route 114 South (Henniker). At the flashing yellow light in center of town, turn right onto Western Ave. (If you go over a bridge you've gone too far.) Continue on Western Avenue for about 1.4 miles. At a fork in the road, bear left (Old Hillsboro Rd will go to the right). Parking is on the right side, immediately after the fork in the road. The media event will be held on the two-lane steel bridge over the Contoocook River. The dam can be seen from the bridge, as well as from marked paths on both sides of river.
