Remove Bobhouses Today!

CONCORD, N.H. -- If your bobhouse is still on solid ice -- and not deep under water -- you'd better make plans to remove it today.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials remind ice fishermen that, under state law, bobhouses must be removed before April 1. The law is designed to ensure that bobhouses and their contents do not fall through the ice or become a hazard to boaters.

Most people have already removed their bobhouses, since the ice receded from many New Hampshire waters weeks ago. But there are still a few bobhouses out there -- and the ice isn't getting any thicker.

Failing to remove a bobhouse or ice shanty from public waters or public property by the deadline can result in temporary loss of the owner's fishing license. Leaving bobhouses on the property of another person without permission also is a violation of state law, so bobhouse owners must take care to move the structures to their own property.

In cases where Fish and Game officers can't identify the owner, the Department has authority to claim any bobhouse (or ice shanty) and its contents not removed by the deadline and to sell all the items at public auction or destroy them.

Ice fishermen with questions should contact their local conservation officer or call Fish and Game's Law Enforcement Division in Concord at (603) 271-3127.
