Russell Cox Search and Rescue Update
CONCORD, N.H. -- Under New Hampshire law (RSA 153-A:24), search and rescue missions are reviewed to determine whether there was recklessness involved. If such a determination is made, the person rescued may be held liable and be billed to cover the cost of the rescue. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will not request reimbursement of expenses associated with the rescue of Russell Cox.
Last week, Cox, of Andover, Massachusetts, was saved by a search and rescue effort in New Hampshire's White Mountains, but his wife, Brenda, tragically died in the incident. Russell Cox was evacuated by helicopter from Mt. Lafayette on March 23 after spending two nights stranded on the mountaintop. The couple had originally set out for a day hike on Sunday, March 21, before encountering severe winter conditions.
