Hiker Dies in Hart’s Location
Update - October 14, 2013: The deceased hiker has been identified as James Byrne from S. Dennis, Massachusetts
LANCASTER, NH -- A Massachusetts man died while hiking in Hart’s Location late Saturday morning (October 12, 2103). Rescuers responded to a call of an unresponsive hiker, age 60, approximately one-half mile up the Ripley Falls Trail at 11:00 a.m.
A team of rescuers from the Bartlett Fire Department, Bartlett Jackson EMS, the U.S. Forest Service and passing volunteers carried the hiker back to the trailhead by litter, after attempts of CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) by the hiker’s friend and other volunteers proved unsuccessful.
The man had been hiking with family and friends when the incident occurred. An exact cause of death has not been determined at this time, and the victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
NH Fish and Game Conservation Officers, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Dept., and the Carroll Police Dept. also provided assistance.
