Manchester Man Killed in Auburn Snowmobile Accident
CONCORD, N.H. – A forty one year-old Manchester man was killed and a nine year old boy was seriously injured in a mid-afternoon snowmobile accident in Auburn, N.H., on Saturday, February 16, 2013.
At around 3:30 p.m., the victim and a young boy were riding together on a single snowmobile in Front Park in Auburn near Lake Massabesic. According to witnesses the two hit a bump causing the machine to accelerate rapidly. Both riders were ejected from the machine and thrown onto rocks. The machine continued forward, hitting a rock and launching 72 feet through the air and into a small brook.
The man and the boy were riding with another friend who was behind them, on a separate snowmobile, when the accident happened. The friend quickly called 911 to start emergency personnel to the scene. Two nearby fishermen also witnessed the accident and ran over to help and stood by until rescuers arrived on scene. The man and the boy were both wearing helmets, but unfortunately sustained serious injuries to other parts of their bodies.
Auburn Police and Fire Departments, Derry Fire and Rescue, Manchester Water Works and NH Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded to the scene. The man was quickly removed and transported to the Elliot Hospital in Manchester, where he was pronounced deceased. The young boy was also transported to the Elliot Hospital in Manchester to be evaluated and treated for his injuries.
According to Conservation Officer Geoffrey Pushee, "This tragic incident serves as a reminder for all riders to use due care and caution at all times when operating snowmobiles and OHRVs."
The accident is under investigation by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
