Gearing up
Do you have your license? Think you are ready to hunt? Good! Here is some gear you won't want to leave behind, keeping in mind that your FIRST consideration should be basic safety items. (Click here for hiking safety basics.)
For firearms hunters:
- Shotgun, rifle, or muzzleloader — Visit your local gun shop to figure out what's best for you
- Orange cap or vest
- Map & compass
- Sturdy boots
- Hand warmers
- Water and snacks
- Survival kit
- Watch (to check shooting hours)
- Shooting glasses
- Hunt itinerary — To tell those at home where you'll be and when to expect
you back
- Plenty of ammo
- Bird dog (optional!)

For bowhunters:
- Bow & arrows
- Rubber boots (don't hold scent)
- Orange to wear in and out of the woods
- Tree stand
- Safety harness/climbing rope
- Pack
- Haul line
- Water & snacks
- Map & compass
- Survival kit
- Binoculars
- Flashlight
- Watch (to check shooting hours)
