Trout Stocked for Winter Anglers
By Jason Smith, Fish Culture Operations Supervisor
Winter anglers in New Hampshire will have some trout stocked especially for them once again this fall. New Hampshire Fish and Game stocks trout every year during the fall months, mostly to bolster the winter ice fishery, which should translate into some exciting action for winter anglers this year.
Anglers going after trout can find lists of waters that remain open to the taking of trout year round on the Fish and Game website:
Rules for waterbodies with special regulations are listed in the N.H. Freshwater Fishing Digest, available from license agents or on the Fish and Game website (click here for fishing publications).
Annually, Fish and Game stocks a total of New Hampshire lakes and ponds managed for trout with no closed season with rainbow trout (see below). Additionally, the hatcheries will stock out post-spawn brook and brown trout into selected waterbodies without a closed season before winter. Anglers wishing to pursue these “big boys” may want to try their luck at favorites such as Lake Tarleton, Manning Lake, Tewksbury Pond among others.
Following is a list of New Hampshire lakes and ponds that are scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout during the fall of 2011 (please note that the list below is the plan for 2011. There are many more N.H. waterbodies open for year-round fishing than are included on this list):
Beaver Lake, Derry
Massabesic Lake, Manchester
Opechee Lake, Laconia
Waukewan Lake, Meredith
Winona Lake, Center Harbor
Chocorua Lake, Tamworth
Wentworth Lake, Wolfeboro
Crystal Lake, Gilmanton
Akers Pond, Errol
Cedar Pond, Milan
Martin Meadow Pond, Lancaster
Sunapee Lake (Little), New London
Stinson Lake, Rumney
Pearl Lake, Lisbon
Streeter Pond, Sugar Hill
*New for 2011! To further enhance the ice fishing opportunities in the Southwestern region of New Hampshire, some stocking adjustments have been made to the 2011 stocking schedule. Five waterbodies that have traditionally not been part of the fall schedule are now included. These five waterbodies will receive a combination of yearling brook, brown and rainbow trout for this fall. The five new waterbodies are:
Forest Lake, Winchester
Laurel Lake, Fitzwilliam
Deering Reservoir, Deering
Gustin Pond, Marlow
Newell Pond, Alstead
